Wonder the World Vol.23: “Santa Claus Village in Finland”(フィンランドのサンタクロース村)

Florence (Indonesia)
Hey, friends! My name is Florence, and I am from Indonesia. I participated Kumon English Immersion Activity (KEIA) in 2022, while I was completing my bachelor’s program in Japan. In 2024, I started my master’s program in Finland. This time, I will share about Santa Claus Village in Finland!

Have you ever wondered about Santa Claus?

Do you know where Santa Claus lives?
If you are guessing Santa Claus lives in the Arctic Circle, yes, you are right!

Quiz 1

But where is the Arctic Circle exactly?
A. Copenhagen, Denmark
B. Stockholm, Sweden
C. Rovaniemi, Finland

Did you know that you can experience meeting Santa Claus and go on a reindeer sled?
In December 2024, I went to Santa Claus Village to visit Santa Claus. I was lucky that day because there was no blizzard or heavy snowfall.

Quiz 2

But the temperature fell to ____.
A. -5°C
B. -10°C
C. -22°C

I was severely freezing, suffering the fact that I am originally from Indonesia, a tropical country that ranges its temperature from 28 °C to 32 °C. I was equipped with complete winter clothing from head to toe, but it was not enough, so I grabbed the heat packs that I brought in my bag.

It was a long queue, taking approximately 20 minutes in the cold weather, and my face, hands, and toes felt numb.
It was not my turn yet, but the officer approached the line and shouted, “One passenger, one passenger”. Since I came there alone, I raised my hand and said “one!”. “One? Are you alone?” “Yeah, one please!” “Okay, great, come with me”. Who knows, coming alone will make a sudden fast track for me!

The Reindeer Sled & Santa Claus Offce

The reindeer sled was 400 meters long. I sat on the sled covered in a reindeer fur blanket, and a reindeer herder accompanied me during the sleigh ride around the forest covered with snow at the Santa Claus Village.

After the cold, magical ride with the reindeer sled, I came inside Santa Claus’s office. When I came inside, the walls were stacked with colorful presents, Christmas figures, and it gave the vibe of Santa Claus’s storage room.
The officer then gave me this huge free bag to store my winter jacket before meeting Santa Claus in his room for a photo.

After another short queue, I finally met Santa Claus and had a short conversation with him. He asked where I was from, and lastly smiled and said, “See you on Christmas”.
Taking Santa Claus’s photograph with my phone was prohibited, but I was able to capture his warmth and friendliness in my mind.

The entry to Santa Claus Village is free, which means you can meet Santa for free! However, to enjoy the attractions like the husky sled or reindeer sled, you need to pay. I would recommend coming in December for the best winter wonderland experience, where everything is covered in snow. And don’t forget to layer up your winter attire properly!

On the train home!

Lastly, I sat on the window seat in the train while witnessing the magical skies of Northern Finland. They were effortlessly beautiful with a pink, orange, and blue gradient. A quote came to my mind on “How amazing it is when you start to appreciate nature and every little thing happening in life”.
