Wonder the World Vol.11: “An Indonesian Community in Southern Part of Japan”（日本の南部（大分県別府市）にあるインドネシア人コミュニティ）

日本の南部（大分県別府市）にあるインドネシア人コミュニティ　
海外にいても母国のコミュニティを感じることができます。私が住んでいる別府市にはわりと大きなインドネシアコミュニティがあります。母国以外の場所でも「母国の伝統、現状や未来」に思いをはせることができるのです。

Hi everyone! My name is Caroline or Carol for short. I originated from Indonesia and currently student in Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Beppu, Oita. I also have some part-time jobs right now and I am one of the Group Leaders for Kumon EIH Program.

About Indonesia

Firstly, let’s get to know Indonesia. My country is located on the Southeastern part of Asia continent. It would roughly take around 7-8 hours of flight from Japan. Compared to Japan that has 4 seasons, Indonesia only has two seasons which are dry and wet seasons. We are also known for our mesmerizing scenery, spicy food, and friendliness of the people.

In the southern part of Japan specifically in Oita prefecture where I live, I find one interesting thing as an Indonesian. The Indonesian community is huge, and I am able to meet hundreds of people from my country just by living in Beppu. This feels like having a new family in one small town. You might be wondering whether is this a good or bad news, right? I will let you know on the next paragraph.

Currently, I am a member of a circle in APU called APUINA which is a community to gather Indonesian people and helped them adjust to Japan’s life. As I am on their external team, I closely work with external parties and one of them being OIFA or Oita Indonesia Friendship Associations. This association was started back in early 2000s since one of the founders discovered how Indonesian’s parents and students are incredibly welcoming towards strangers. Meeting these Japanese people wearing Batik (Indonesian traditional clothes) and adoring our culture even speaking my language made me feel happy and a little bit patriotic.

On the other hand, as the Indonesia community is big, I can see how influential we are. For instance, when I went to part time jobs in one of the restaurants in Beppu; some of the workers are capable to speak Bahasa Indonesia. In APU, Indonesian language is also one of the choices for intern students to learn and we have a language exchange programs to Indonesia two biggest cities, Jakarta and Yogyakarta. Even though in Beppu, I have not yet seen an Indonesian restaurant being open yet. One of my upperclassmen opened an online food business that help us to indulge Indonesia food here.

One biggest difference I found after coming to Beppu is that the Indonesian are more diverse and vibrant. I get to meet people from another city, and I can exchange ideas with them regarding Indonesia’s situation and their future aspirations. Regardless, we are studying abroad we never forget about our own culture and one of them being cooking our traditional food when it is Ramadan or wearing Kain or batik on casual days. Moreover, as Indonesian we adore music and bands. I often attend gigs to see my friends perform with their band mates. The plus point is that they also sing Indonesian songs which makes me feel nostalgic.

Conclusion

In conclusion, from my experience you can see that living abroad does not mean losing our identity and forgetting our roots are. You will find your community when you live outside your country, and it is never wrong to try this kind of experiences.

インドネシアはアジア大陸の南東部に位置し、日本からインドネシアに行くのは飛行機で約7～8時間かかります。日本には四季がありますが、インドネシアには乾季と雨季の2つの季節しかありません。魅惑的な風景、スパイシーな料理、そしてフレンドリーな人々で知られています。私が住んでいる大分県別府市には、わりと大きなインドネシア人のコミュニティがあります。私はここで何百人もの同国の人々と出会え、別府に新しい家族ができたような気分で過ごしています。現在、私はAPU内のAPUINAというサークルに所属しています。このサークルはインドネシア人が日本の生活になじむための活動をしています。私はOIFA （大分インドネシア友好協会）にも所属しています。バティック（インドネシアの伝統衣装）を着て、母国語を話しながら、私たちの文化を愛しくれる日本人たちに出会え、幸せで愛国的な気持ちになりました。

別府のインドネシアのコミュニティは大きくてとても影響力があります。あるレストランでアルバイトをしたときのこと。働いている人の中にはインドネシア語を話せる人もいました。立命館アジア太平洋大学（APU）では、インドネシア語を学べ、インドネシアの二大都市であるジャカルタとジョグジャカルタへの交換留学プログラムもあります。しかし別府には、インドネシア料理店がなかったので、私の上級生の 1 人が、インドネシア料理を満喫できるオンライン食品ビジネスを立ち上げました。

別府は、インドネシア人が様々に活躍し、活気に満ちています。インドネシアの私の出身地以外の都市から来た人々と出会うことができ、インドネシアの現状や将来の夢について意見交換することもできます。私たちは母国を離れて暮らしていますが、母国の文化を忘れることはありません。伝統的な料理を作り、カジュアルにカインやバティックを着たりすることもあります。インドネシア人は音楽が大好き！友人のバンド仲間の演奏を見にライブにはよく行きます。懐かいインドネシア語の歌を歌ってくれるのが嬉しいです。私の経験から、海外に住んでもアイデンティティを失ったり、ルーツを忘れたりはしません。国外に住んでも自分のコミュニティは見つけることはできます。海外に住んでみるのは良い経験ですよ。
