Wonder the World Vol.13: “Benin’s fierce defenders: The Legacy of the Amazons”（ベナン共和国の勇敢なボディガード: アマゾンと呼ばれる女性たち）

皆さま、ベナン共和国についてご存じですか？日本に来てから、自己紹介で自分の国を知っている人に会うことはほとんどありませんでした。名前すら知られていない?! そこで、ここではベナンという国(場所、歴史、そこで活躍したアマゾンと呼ばれた女性たち)についてご紹介します。楽しんで読んでいただければ！

Hello Friends, my name is Jacques. I am from Benin Republic in West Africa. We, Benin people, are called Beninese. I came to Japan in April 2022 for a Master program at Mie University. I have always wanted to visit Japan, mainly because of my love of Japan amine (アニメ), but also because I see Japan as a model of international development through self-commitment and hard work. Since I came to Japan, I barely met people who knows my country after I introduce myself. Not even the name is known. So, since I really enjoyed the EIH events I participated in and learned about other countries, I wish to let you know a bit about my country. I hope you enjoy reading about Benin.

Here is what to know to be able to answer: “Yes, I know Benin.”

The Republic of Benin is a west-African French speaking country next to Nigeria. Originally named “DAHOMEY”, the name was changed to Benin after colonization. The capital city is “Porto-Novo”, but the most known city “Cotonou”. My country is quite far from Japan, as it takes about 22h flight for the travel. The flag has three colors namely Green, Yellow, and Red which respectively stand for Hope of Revival, Good omen, and Bravery. In the following lines, you will read about the people that bore the symbol of this bravery. The brave and fierce Amazons of Benin.

Who were the Amazons?

No, this is not related to the online shopping website. Benin amazons, locally called “Minon” or “N’Nonmiton” meaning “our mothers”, were an elite group of women which main function was to guard the royal palace and protect the king as bodyguard during the period from the 15^th to 19^th century. They were named Amazons by Western Europeans who encountered them, as they were viewed as equivalent to the female warriors of Amazons in Greek mythology.

Why were such important functions assigned to women?

Between the 15^th and 19^th century, African countries, Benin included, were victims of slavery and were under rivalry wars. On one side, the colons used to take the strongest men away as slaves, and many of the remaining ones were killed fighting against rival kingdom armies. The lack of men to ensure safety of the lands, the kids, the kingdom led to the rise of brave women that turned out to be stronger than men from other kingdoms. Whether conquering neighboring tribes or resisting European forces, they were known for their fearlessness.

Influence and Symbolism

Amazons also played key roles in ceremonies and rituals, symbolizing their contributions to the kingdom in many ways. They were feared not only for their physical strength, but also for their strategical thinking, and their mastery of different weapons as they were rigorously trained since a young age. Their presence was not only to discourage potential threats but also a testament to egalitarian values of the Benin society.

Legacy

The story of Benin’s Amazons is an inspiration toward gender equality and the promotion of women potential. But for me, it is also a memory of what crude bravery looks like and what it can achieve. In 2022, the memory of the Amazons was brought back to the world first by the building of a 30m high statue of them in Cotonou, and a movie titled “The woman King”. They represent courage, strength, discipline, and determination. Even in the smallest things, those values are important.

There were moments where things were very tough for even those brave women, but what is important is that they never gave up. They always kept trying, doing their best, striving to reach their goals. That’s why as we are learning English from each other, we should not tend to give up either when it becomes difficult but instead keep working. I am struggling with Japanese Kanjis right now, but I must keep it up. Let’s become fluent in different languages together.

アマゾンは各種儀式でも重要な役割を果たし、さまざまな方法で王国への貢献を象徴する存在でした。彼女たちは身体的な強さだけでなく、幼い頃から厳しい訓練を受けて戦略的思考を持ち、さまざまな武器を使いこなせたのです。彼女らの存在は、潜在的な脅威をも阻止し、ベナン社会の平等主義的価値観の証ともなりました。

ベナンのアマゾンの物語は、～男女平等と女性の可能性の追求～という思いをおこさせてくれます。2022 年、コトヌーに高さ 30 メートルのアマゾンの像が建てられました。映画「ウーマン・キング　無敵の女戦士たち」では、アマゾンの存在が初めて世界に公開されました。勇気、強さ、規律、決意の意図が表れ、私はこれらの価値観を重要だと思いました。

私は今日本語の漢字に苦労していますが、アマゾンの精神～常に力し、最善を尽くし、目標を達成しようと努力し続けあきらめない気持ち～を受け継いで…頑張りたいと思います。皆さんも互いに英語を学びながら、難しくなっても諦めずに努力を続けていきませんか？もっと英語を学び一生懸命頑張りましょう！
