Wonder the World Vol.14: “My Journey: From Self-Study to Becoming GIC Group Leader”（独学～家庭教師の経験～グローバルイマージョンキャンプ（GIC）のリーダーとしての経験）

こんにちは、私の名前はハンナです。外国語として英語を学んでいる日本の生徒の皆さんに私の経験を共有できることを大変うれしく思っています。私の独学の経験～家庭教師の経験～GICリーダーとしての経験、その旅のような過程で学んできたことをお伝えします。何事も一所懸命に努力することで目標達成できることを…。

Hello everyone,
My name is Hanna, originally from Ethiopia. Currently, I’m an undergraduate student at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, majoring in international relations. I am thrilled to share my personal journey of self-study and tutoring with all of you, especially Japanese students learning English as a foreign language. My story is a testament to how dedication and hard work can help you achieve your goals, even without the guidance of a tutor.

The Beginning of My Journey

Growing up, I didn’t have the luxury of a tutor after school. I relied on my own determination and the resources available to me to improve my academic skills, particularly in subjects like English and Math. It was a challenging but rewarding experience that taught me the value of self-discipline and perseverance.

Becoming a Tutor

At the age of 12, when I reached grade 6, I felt a deep desire to help and assist younger students (grades 1 to 3) who were struggling in subjects that I had studied before them. I decided tutoring neighboring children, and soon it expanded to include students around my community. I saw it as an opportunity to support others while also gaining acknowledgement for my contributions. During weekends, I dedicated 5 hours to tutoring 3 to 4 kids. And I continue doing the tutoring and committed myself until the end of high school. It was an exciting journey, and I instilled in me a great sense of responsibility.

Tutoring Taught Me Patience and Leadership

Tutoring wasn’t just about sharing knowledge; it was about fostering a positive learning environment. I learned to be patient, empathetic, and adaptive in my teaching methods. It was an opportunity for personal growth and a chance to become a leader in my own right.

Trying Other Things through Studying Abroad

Applying the skills acquired from tutoring—courage, adaptability, and patience—I ventured into a new challenge, applying to a competitive boarding high school in South Africa. It was a bit scary because it was my first time applying to a school in a different country. Then, I took it further and went to the African Leadership Academy in South Africa after my acceptance letter. There I met people from different countries and make long lasting friendships. This experience not only expanded my education and social life but also opened doors for me to find out about universities abroad, like Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.

Empowering Others Through Education

Being a Global Immersion Camp (GIC) group leader (About GIC) allowed me to witness firsthand the transformation in my students’ learning journeys. I could see their confidence soar as they conquered challenges. It was a fulfilling experience, and I was proud to be a part of their growth in such a short term.

Conclusion

To sum up, my journey—from self-learning and tutoring to studying abroad and becoming a GIC group leader—was challenging but essential for my current position. Learning on my own and working part-time equipped me with life skills like patience, courage, and perseverance. GIC provided valuable lessons, and being a group leader involves effective communication, leadership, and fostering a friendly learning environment. My self-study background and part-time job contributed practical skills, enabling me to excel in this role. As a GIC leader, I find joy in helping others learn, using my experiences to inspire and guide them toward their goals. This role has underscored the importance of hard work in achieving personal milestones. I hope my story inspires you to explore diverse experiences, learn from them, and discover your own skills, ultimately making meaningful contributions to society. Remember, never give up in the face of challenges.

子どものころ、放課後に塾や家庭教師から習えるようなぜいたくは、できませんでした。私は自分自身で利用できる教材を選び自分一人で、英語や数学などの学力を向上させていきました。それは、自己規律と忍耐力の要る、大変でしたが達成感のある経験でした。6 年生になったとき、私は自分がすでに学習した科目で苦労している人たちを助けたいと強く思い、低学年の生徒の家庭教師のアルバイトをすることにしました。高校卒業まで週末の 5 時間を使い、近隣地域の 3 ～ 4 人の子供たちを指導していました。子どもたちを教える経験は刺激的な旅のようであり、大きな責任を感じていました。この経験から忍耐力、リーダーシップを身に着けていきます。個別指導は知識を共有するだけでなく、前向きな学習環境を育むことが必要です。私は、忍耐強く、生徒たちに共感し、個人個人にあった教え方をしました。それは、私自身の成長と指導力をはぐくむ良い機会となりました。

家庭教師経験から得た勇気、適応力、忍耐力を糧に私は新たな挑戦を試みました。競争率の高い、南アフリカの全寮制高校に行くことにしたのです。外国の学校に出願するのは初めてだったので少し不安でしたが、私はそこでさまざまな国の人々と出会い、長く続く友情を築きました。この経験は私の勉学と社会生活の幅を広げるだけでなく、立命館アジア太平洋大学のような海外の大学に進学する扉も開くことにもつながりました。

その後「教育を通じて他の人々に力を与える グローバル イマージョン キャンプ (GIC) のグループ リーダー」を経験し、生徒たちが課題を克服し、自信を高めていく姿、変化を見ることができました。それは充実した経験で、短期間で彼らの成長の一助を担えたことを誇りに思いました。

独学～GIC グループのリーダーになるまでの私の道のりは素晴らしいものでした。 自力で勉強し家庭教師のアルバイトをしたこともとても役に立ちました。 公文式、GICプログラムでの学びも大きかったです。 GIC グループのリーダーは単なる進行役ではないので、 優れたコミュニケーション、リーダーシップ、親しみやすい学習空間を作ることが要されます。GIC グループのリーダーとして、私は喜んで生徒さんの学習をサポートしています。 私は他の人を勇気づけ、導くことができるようになりました。 GICの経験、役割は私の個人的な目標を達成することにも役立ちました。自分が望むものを達成するために一生懸命やる、努力することはとても大切です。私の話が皆さんの「さまざまなことに挑戦し、経験から学び、自分のスキルを発見するきっかけ」になれば嬉しいです。そこから有意義に社会に貢献することができるのです。
