Wonder the World Vol.18: “Repair Cafe”（リペアカフェ）

皆さん、こんにちは。私はタイ出身のタンタンです。環境と社会への貢献に熱心に取り組んでいます。地球温暖化から、一部の人が呼んでいる地球規模の沸騰への恐ろしい変化により、私たちが行動を起こすことがこれまで以上に重要になっています。大きな変化を生む可能性のある概念（考え方）、「リペアカフェ（Repair Café）」をご紹介したいと思います。この記事では、リペアカフェが廃棄物の削減にどのように役立つか、そしてどのように人々を結びつけるかについて、私の経験と洞察を共有します。皆さんが参加し、新しいスキルを学び、地球の保護に貢献するきっかけになれば幸いです。物を捨てずに修理するなどの小さな行動が、私たちの環境にどれほど大きな影響を与えるかを見てみましょう。

Hi everyone! I’m Thantan from Thailand, and I’m passionate about the environment and giving back to society. With the scary shift from global warming to what some are now calling global boiling, it’s more important than ever for us to take action. I want to introduce you to a concept that can make a big difference: the “Repair Cafe.” In this article, I’ll share my experiences and insights about repair cafes, how they help reduce waste, and how they bring people together. I hope to inspire you to get involved, learn new skills, and help protect our planet. Let’s see how small actions, like fixing things instead of throwing them away, can make a huge impact on our environment!

Repair Cafe

Have you ever heard of a “repair cafe”? It’s a special place where people come together to fix broken items instead of throwing them away. This helps reduce waste and teaches valuable repair skills. I recently visited and volunteered at a repair cafe, and I want to share my experience with you.

What is a Repair Cafe?

A repair cafe is a community event where volunteers help people repair their broken items for free. This can include things like clothes, electronics, bikes, toys, and etc. The goal is to protect the environment by fixing things instead of buying new ones and also to have a stronger relationship within your own community! The first repair cafe started in Amsterdam in 2009 as a movement, now it became an international foundation for sustainability and there are cafes in Belgium, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and in dozens of other countries around the world. Repair Café has even made its way to India and Japan!

When I walked into the repair cafe, I was amazed by how friendly and welcoming everyone was. There were tables set up with different tools and stations for various types of repairs. The cafe can be in many different places, such as; coffee shop, park, public space, library, as long as there are space, tables, and simple facilities.

Volunteering as a Repairer

I also volunteered as a repairer, helping others fix their electronic devices. It was rewarding to see people happy when their gadgets were working again. I learned a lot about repair & sustainability while helping the team setting up the first repair cafe in Thailand! (Now we had 5 sessions of repair cafe!)

Why Repair is Better than Recycling

Repairing is even better than recycling because it extends the life of items and reduces the need for new materials. Recycling uses energy and resources, while repair saves both. This idea is part of the circular economy, where products are reused, repaired, and recycled to minimize waste and make the most of resources.

What I Learned

During my time at the repair cafe, I learned several important things:

• 1. Patience and Persistence: Fixing things can take time and effort, but it’s worth it.
• 2. Teamwork: Working with others makes the process easier and more enjoyable.
• 3. New Skills: I learned how to repair more things from my fellow volunteers.
• 4. Environmental Awareness: By fixing items, we can reduce waste and take better care of our planet, and we could also pass the knowledge forward to help the world even more.

My experience at the repair cafe was amazing. I encourage you to visit or volunteer at a repair cafe if you have the chance, or you can even organize you own repair cafe for your community! It’s a wonderful way to learn new skills, help the environment, and connect with others. Remember, fixing things is not only practical but also a lot of fun!

修理はアイテムの寿命を延ばし、新しい材料の必要性を減らすため、リサイクルよりもさらに優れています。リサイクルはエネルギーと資源を使用しますが、修理は両方を節約します。このアイデアは循環経済の一部であり、製品を再利用、修理、リサイクルして廃棄物を最小限に抑え、資源を最大限に活用します。

リペアカフェでの私の経験は素晴らしかったです。機会があれば、修理カフェを訪れたりボランティア活動をしたりすることをお勧めします。あるいは、コミュニティのために独自のリペアカフェを組織することもできます。新しいスキルを学び、環境に貢献し、他の人とつながるための素晴らしい方法です。覚えておいてください、物を修理することは実用的なだけでなく、とても楽しいことなのです。
